Do We All Have The Same Concepts?

To add to my previous post, a reader named Kevin said that from person to person techniques may change. I asked if concepts change from person to person? He used the armbar analogy. "I don't think that the concepts change, only the technique. Example; how many armbar techniques are there? Alot. The concept is still the same. A concept is an idea; the concept, in this case, is to use leverage to manipulate the arm in such a way that if your opponent does not submit they risk elbow hyper-extension and possible breakage."

He is correct, we all use different techniques to get to that same idea, to hyperextend the elbow. I just wanted to add to that a bit more and just play with this idea. Is my concept the same as your concept of an armbar? Slight differences in our concepts will express themselves differently in our technique. For me, the concept is a bit broader and it is something I have learned from old school guys.

The concept is - to take as little damage as possible, the best way is to be in positional control, where I may submit my opponent with him having no recourse.

What does this mean? Well in the instance of the armbar, I will most likely look to do the armbar from mount. Where I am finally in a position where I can attack him, he cannot attack me, my weight is on him, his weight is not on me, he cannot touch my face and I can touch his. What about armbar from guard? I would most likely want to sweep him before I attempt an armbar, or armbar and sweep at the same time, so once again I am armbarring from the top position. I can hit his face if I chose to do so, he could not even gouge my eyes if he wanted to. Ultimately even if I lose the armbar, I still have top position. So the position, control, and safety becomes more important than ending the fight. In a real life scenario, it is better to have a draw where I come out unscathed then win, but I am a bloody mess.

So then a subtle difference occurs, finish and hyperextend his arm in all the different fashions (from top, bottom, cross side, standing, half guard, rolling, kimura attack from giving up my back, etc.) as opposed to using some of the same finishes from the same positions when all criteria are met.
