American Kickboxing Academy

I am going to be reprinting some old classic entries from my previous blog called The Angry Grappler. It will chronicle the evolution in my understanding of martial arts.

This is a real MMA gym. I think I counted over 10 MMA fighters I recognized. Paul Buentello (you can see him stealing my lunch money in the pic), Josh Koscheck, Josh Thompson, John Fitch, and many others.
They also told me about a rising heavyweight who hadn't had his first MMA fight yet. His name was Cain Velasquez and everyone there told me he would be a UFC champion someday soon.
I took a BJJ class here and unfortunately Dave Camarillo was not around so one of his purples taught the class. But the moves we practiced are signature Dave Camarillo, as in, very dynamic. We did a series for taking the back similar to what we worked on at Paragon, except here it was a bit more acrobatic.

We finished with some fun drills where we rolled and switched positions, then finished with live sparring. I rolled with some of Dave's purples and a brown. I thought hey, I'm a pretty good blue, I can hang with their purples. I was wrong they beat the crap out of me. Which is a good thing.

The atmosphere was relaxed, everyone was nice, lots of space to roll, lots of guys. Their style is very aggressive, attack and if you get a position, just finish. Definitely need to come back when Dave Cam is in town! But AKA is AOKAY in my book. All the fighters, Javier, Jerome Turcan, Josh Thomson, another instructor Alex, all nice and all class.
