Parkour

I am going to be reprinting some old classic entries from my previous blog called The Angry Grappler. It will chronicle the evolution in my understanding of martial arts.

Parkour is a french form of expression created by a guy named David Belle. You have probably seen it in commercials where guys are running around the city and running over tops of buildings, fences, no obstacle can stop them, down buildings, etc. Its a way from going from point A to point B without going around any obstacles, going right through in the quickest and most efficient manner. The people who do this are called traceurs.

This reminds me of Jiu Jitsu, and the principle of Parkour can relate. Point A to point B with as little moves as possible, not letting any obstacle stop you from that submission. The thing about Jiu Jitsu though is you can't rely on only one route, always have to have different roads ready, because unlike Parkour, in Jiu Jitsu, point B is always moving. Both are about the body and natural body movements and how it adapts to nature and the most natural and impactful and relevant way of expression. Parkour was created with the idea of escape. Jiu Jitsu was created with the idea of submission. Either way, once a goal is achieved, you in that journey have created a beautiful expression of art.
