Ralph Gracie San Francisco

I am going to be reprinting some old classic entries from my previous blog called The Angry Grappler. It will chronicle the evolution in my understanding of martial arts.

Ralph has a few schools but San Francisco is his baby. It produced Cameron Earle, BJ Penn, Luke Stewart, Brad Jackson, Kurt Osiander, and so many other badasses!

Its taught by Kurt and before I get into it let me go into the flavor of each academy. Jiu jitsu is jiu jitsu but each academy has their own feel. My academy HBJJ has unparalleled technique. One of the most technical schools out there and we spend more time on technique than anyone else bar none. Paragon is cardio for days and relentless aggression and attacks. Its hard to keep up with their pace and eventually they overwhelm you. AKA is like Dave Camarillo, dynamic movements and judo grips from hell. Once they got a grip on you, you will be on the bicycle running backwards. Ralph Gracie had that certain intensity. Everyone's tough and Kurt has that Ralph intensity. Even in the way he just talks or carries himself. He's got an army there. Its a huge facility with a lot of mat space. Our academy is affiliated with Renzo who is Ralph's brother so its almost like visiting a cousin.

Rolling with Kurt is like rolling in tar. He moves slow and just creeps up on you and squeezes you until he gets what he wants. And man watch out for older purple belts.
Out of all the schools I've gone to, they are the toughest and meanest too! Haha I love it. They kick my ass in what feels like how a dad should whoop on his son. Old man strength and slow deliberate movements beating young speed.

It was an intense work out and I loved every minute of it.
